Let's split it in two and start with the intranet. An intranet is an organization's internal computer network. This is where a company website runs that serves as a communication channel and to exchange information between employees. That's where the social aspect comes in.

The term “social” in Dutch is “social” and we are talking about interaction between people. A social intranet is therefore essentially an online communication channel within your organization.
