Umbraco vs Wordpress
You've finally made the decision to have your website developed. After all, it's your business card. But you haven't decided which open-source CMS you want to use yet and you're unsure between WordPress or Umbraco. Let's delve into both content management systems.

WordPress
WordPress is open-source software written in PHP and was originally developed to make it easy to publish articles. The first version was released in 2003. The maintenance and further development of the software is done by a large community of developers.
Over the years, WordPress has increasingly been used as a content management system. His popularity is mainly due to how easy it is to set up a website to taste without any knowledge of coding. This is because you can choose from a wide range of free or paid designs (theme templates) and plugins. So you have the functionalities at your disposal almost endlessly.
Popular but vulnerable
This form of popularity also comes with its drawbacks. Anyone can create a WordPress website without knowledge of coding and security, which makes it more likely that there are a large number of outdated versions online. Due to its many uses and outdated versions, the software is a target for hackers. After all, the more options, the greater the chance of a successful hack.
In addition, it happens that the (free) plugins do not WordPress vulnerability increases. If a used plugin is not improved immediately after an update to WordPress and no longer works in the new version, it is usually chosen to stay with the older version of the CMS. But it also happens that the quality of the written code, especially in free plugins, is lower, with all the consequences that entail. In addition, WordPress is basically less secure. Tasks such as a two-factor authentication or strong password policy should be ingrained into the basis of the CMS. Instead of solving it with the installation of additional security plugins.
Umbraco
Niels Hartvig, founder & CEO of Umbraco developed the Umbraco CMS in 2000 and released the first open-source version in 2005. The CMS is written in C# and based on Microsoft's .NET framework. The software is open-source.
Umbraco also has a large community of developers who contribute to the further development of the software. But the biggest difference with WordPress is that the Umbraco HQ team itself is also actively developing it and they are setting the lines.
Regarding Umbraco's safety, this CMS was developed in .NET technology. Basically, this technology has a safety mechanism. Basically, this already makes the software a lot safer than WordPress.
Large and complex websites
Umbraco is particularly suitable for larger and more complex websites and online solutions, where links to other systems such as Salesforce or other CRMs are possible. In addition, Umbraco is ideal for a large editorial team that manages the content together.
Umbraco is also an excellent solution for small websites. The only downside is that there are few ready-made templates. As a result, building a website in Umbraco has a steep learning curve. After all, you will also need to be able to write code.
Content input
With both solutions, you'll be great when it comes to entering and managing content. The only difference is that the WordPress user interface is structured differently than Umbraco's. By nature, WordPress is a blogging platform. An editor provides the articles and pages with content that appears in a large list.
Umbraco does not do that, there is no list but a handy tree structure. As a result, the structure of your website is immediately visible. The structure can also be fully customized. This makes Umbraco a flexible and user-friendly system that can find your way there intuitively and quickly.

Technology
There are major differences in terms of technology. WordPress runs on any operating system with a web server, PHP, and MySQL. If you want to run Umbraco, you need servers and PCs that run on Windows. Hosting is then possible via Microsoft Azure.
Umbraco is going to change in the future. The next major release will no longer be developed on the .NET Framework but on Microsoft's .NET Core cross-platform. Umbraco will soon also be able to run on Linux or Mac. This is a big step forward and makes Umbraco more future-proof.
Licenses and fees
Umbraco and WordPress are both open-source and therefore free to use. Of course, a CMS is never really “free”. Depending on your wishes and requirements that you want your website to meet, costs are associated. But what costs should you consider?
Let's assume a situation where you want to have a distinctive website and therefore don't use free or paid templates. Then you will receive the following costs:
- Advice
- Online strategy and design
- Design implementation and testing
- Project Management
- Hosting
- Training and support
These costs exist regardless of whether you choose Umbraco or WordPress. Furthermore, both parties offer 'In the Cloud' services such as Umbraco Cloud and Umbraco Heartcore. The last service is a headless CMS that allows you to create a complete online marketing platform.
Conclusion
WordPress is easy to use. You have a wide choice of ready-to-use templates and functionalities, which means that this CMS is basically cheaper. One point of discussion is security, which can have a long-term effect and ultimately result in a costly website.
In the longer term, Umbraco is the safest choice. You have a CMS at your disposal that can be fully customized to your needs and requirements. It is very user-friendly and can be expanded into a complete online marketing platform. It is an excellent solution for smaller organizations as well as large organizations.
Our advice for a successful website is Umbraco. A user-friendly and secure system provides excellent performance and is suitable for any beautiful web design!
