In an earlier blog, we wrote about how to make your website accessible to people with a digital disability. But what are digital restrictions really and how can you take them into account when designing your website? At Xuntos, we help companies make their digital environment accessible to everyone. In this blog, we explain what digital restrictions are, what impact they have and what you can do to help people with a digital disability on your website.
Digital disability
A digital disability refers to obstacles that someone has to communicate digitally, find information, or use online services. These restrictions can be caused by physical or mental conditions, but also because of inaccessible websites or devices.
Examples of digital restrictions:
1. Visual impairments:
- Low vision, color blindness, or complete blindness.
- Difficulty reading texts due to low contrast or small font size.
- Screen readers who are unable to retrieve insufficient information due to poor
HTML structures.
2. Auditory disabilities:
- Hearing loss or complete deafness.
- Absence of subtitles for videos or podcasts.
3. Motor restrictions:
- Difficulty operating a mouse or touchscreen, for example due to tremor or paralysis.
- No support for keyboard navigation.
4. Cognitive disabilities:
- Difficulty understanding complex language or information.
- Confusion due to inconsistent design or unclear navigation.
5. Temporary restrictions:
- Situations where you temporarily experience a disability, such as a broken arm or using a device in bright sunlight.
Understanding Digital Limitations
To help users of your website or app in the best possible way, it's important to know what digital restrictions exist. If you are aware of this, this has the following benefits:
1. Reach more users
More than 20% of the population has some form of disability that affects their use of digital resources. By making your website accessible, you reach a larger audience and ensure that no one is left out.
2. Improve usability
Many measures that address digital restrictions also improve the overall user experience. Good contrast, clear navigation and simple language make your website easier to use for everyone.
3. Comply with legal obligations
From June 28, 2025, it will be mandatory to make websites and apps accessible, as set out in the European Accessibility Act (EAA). Companies that fail to comply risk fines and reputational damage.
4. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Accessibility shows that your company is committed to inclusiveness. This not only contributes to a positive image, but also makes your company more attractive to customers and partners.
How can you address digital restrictions?
Solving digital restrictions starts with awareness. Here are a few steps you can take:
1. Analyze your current website
An accessibility check identifies where your website is deficient. For example, technical adjustments such as adding alternative texts for images or improvements in your design such as better color contrast.
2. Work according to the four principles of accessibility (POUR)
- Perceivable: Make sure that all information is visible, for example through subtitles or alternative texts.
- Operable: Make the website accessible to users with keyboards or assistive technologies.
- Comprehensible: Use simple language and logical structure.
- Robust: Make sure your website works on all devices and browsers, including screen readers.

3. Optimize for various constraints
For example:
- Visual restrictions: Add alt texts and use sufficient contrast.
- Auditory disabilities: Provide subtitles or transcripts for audio and video content.
- Motor restrictions: Make sure buttons are large enough and can be operated without a mouse.
4. Involve experts
Adapting a website for accessibility requires knowledge of technology, design and content. At Xuntos, we have experienced specialists who guide you through every step of the process.
