End of Umbraco 8

For everyone who has their site running on Umbraco 8, make sure to keep reading. A while ago, Umbraco announced that Umbraco version 8 will enter the EOL phase on February 24, 2024. The EOL means the End of life. We consciously say goodbye and work on the future with the latest versions.

What does End of Life mean for Umbraco 8?

The Umbraco development team will no longer offer further support as of February 24, 2024. There will be no more minor releases or patch releases.
This means that they no longer develop, do no maintenance and no longer fix bugs. But more importantly, stop doing security updates.

In order not to run into unnecessary problems with your website, it is wise to upgrade your website. The chance of being hacked or of bugs occurring is increasing. Umbraco is now almost at version 15, so it's no strange step to upgrade to this version now.

What can I expect from my supplier?

For each website, the impact of an upgrade is different. This simply has to do with the fact that every website is different. And of course, it has to do with how complex your website is.

Umbraco 8 upgrade work

You should take this into account anyway

  • Migration of the database, properties, controllers, views and possibly customization
  • Redesigning DevOps
  • Deploy to test and then to production
  • Converting obsolete properties into the CMS
  • Test the migrated environment and fix bugs that have arisen
  • Editorial stop when in production

because Umbraco when version 9 changes the underlying framework (because .NET is also being further developed), an upgrade from 8 to a version higher than 10 causes breaking changes. That is why a large part of these activities is customized.

The investments for an upgrade can therefore vary considerably. Most suppliers inform and advise their customers. If you haven't taken any steps yet, talk to your CMS supplier. Don't wait too long with this, because the end of life date is already in sight.
