A decoupled CMS is a content management system that has both the properties of a traditional CMS and a headless CMS. That is why a decoupled CMS is also known as a “hybrid CMS”. We'd love to tell you more about it.

Like a headless CMS, a decoupled CMS separates the functions of the backend with the frontend. The decoupled CMS connects via a set of predefined interfaces or APIs. This offers more flexibility and security for content management and more freedom and opportunities for development.

Hint! Want to know more about a headless CMS? Read all about it in our blog What is a headless CMS?

How does a decoupled CMS work?

A decoupled CMS basically works the same as a traditional or headless CMS. Namely, that content management takes place in the backend. The difference is the connection with the front end. Where a traditional CMS has the backend intertwined with the frontend and where a headless CMS connects the backend to different front ends by means of APIs, a decoupled CMS has the best of both worlds, namely that both options are possible.

For example, as a content manager, you can easily modify the main website via the backend, because it includes a direct link (like a traditional CMS). In addition, you can have separate frontends developed for different devices and then link them to the backend using an API.

The benefits of a decoupled CMS

The decoupled CMS offers several advantages:

  • Flexibility
  • liberty
  • Audit
  • Safety
  • Scalability
  • Convenience
  • Do I need a decoupled CMS?

Depending on your business goals and situation, one CMS is a better choice than the other. A decoupled CMS is particularly interesting for companies that want to be flexible to present content at pre-set presentation layers and also have the option to easily extend this to other platforms or devices. As a result, a decoupled CMS is popular among larger companies with a comprehensive content strategy.
