Umbraco 17 faster, more stable and more scalable
An important moment, the new version Umbraco 17 was released on November 27.
At Xuntos, we follow, as Umbraco platinum partner, the Umbraco technological roadmap meticulously. In this article, we list the most important innovations and explain why Umbraco 17 is an excellent choice for digital growth.
This version of Umbraco 17 is not just an update. It is the new Long-Term Support (LTS) version for the Umbraco CMS.
Umbraco releases a new major release every six months. But version 17 is different:
- It's the next LTS release, built for long-term stability.
- It completes the modernization of the back office that started in Umbraco 14.
- The entire ecosystem: packages, extensions and add-ons has been improved
For agencies, developers and organizations, this means:
a mature, future-proof basis on which you can safely continue to build.
What are the most important innovations in Umbraco 17?
1. Built on .NET 10 LTS: Maximum Performance and Stability
Umbraco 17 is fully up and running .NET 10 LTS, which ensures:
- higher performance
- improved security
- long-term support
- optimal development experience
The combination of Umbraco 17 + .NET 10 makes the platform faster, more economical and more reliable.
2. Load-balancing for the back office: truly scalable content creation
The back office can now be distributed across multiple servers.
What this means:
- larger editorial teams are served faster
- no more single point of failure
- improved stability at high content volumes
- easier scalable infrastructure
For organizations with many editors, international teams, or peak periods in content management, this is a huge step forward.
3. Fully consistent date and time processing (UTC)
Small change, big impact.
All dates in Umbraco are now stored and processed in UTC, which ensures:
- error-free publications across time zones
- consistent logs and reports
- more reliable scheduling in multi-region setups
With the new Date Time Picker, editors can also easily select time zones. Ideal for international websites.
4. Major accessibility improvements in the back office
Together with external experts, the Umbraco back office has been further developed at the WCAG level. Many of the improvements are now available in 17 or will follow in 17.1.
That means:
- predictable workflows for all users
- better support for screen readers
- more accessible management for organizations that also need to work in an accessible way themselves
5. Much improved documentation thanks to the community
More than 40 articles have been rewritten or completely renewed.
For developers, this means:
- clearer explanation
- better examples
- easier onboarding
