Web design trends in 2024

What are the trends and developments for website design this year? What we know for sure is that the European Accessibility Act (EAA) will take effect in June 2025. This law requires e-commerce companies to make their services digitally accessible. Digital accessibility will therefore increasingly become the norm. We will also see more of the influence of AI, the return of the gradient, the Bento box surface distribution and function over form, as well as minimalism.

Digital accessibility

Since 2018, the websites of government institutions must comply with the Digitaccesible (EN 301 549 WCAG 2.1 levels A and AA). By 2025, websites and apps will be required to comply with international accessibility guidelines across the European Union. So we can't ignore it anymore.

The guidelines have an impact on web design. The designer will have to deal with this and apply the guidelines, for example, not all colors are suitable for displaying text. After all, you have to meet a certain contrast ratio.

In short, digital information must be accessible to everyone, regardless of the device used to do so. To achieve accessibility, this first starts with the design of the website or app. The only question is how will this be controlled, perhaps with AI.

Get web design ideas with AI

Since last year, the rise of AI has grown considerably. Tools like DALL-E and Midjourney can help with a new project, such as having AI write composite images or text to replace “Lorem ipsum...”.

If you're stuck in your creation process as a designer, ask ChatGPT a question. Who knows, it might help you solve your design issues for renewed inspiration. AI is not immediately suitable for a final end product, but it does provide opportunities to help with the design process.

Back on the road, the gradient.

Yes, they are back! The gradients are there again, but in a different way. Preferably a combination of different colors with a bright contrast. This way, you can use it to make part of the website stand out and draw attention to it.

But you can also use the gradient creatively in letters or images. To make images more visually appealing, you can apply a gradient color overlay, or to create more unity and make the image better match the colors of the website.

The Bento box in web design

You may be familiar with the Bento box, a lunch box with different sized compartments to keep different foods neatly separated. The trend is clearly reflected in the web design galleries, blocks designed in a grid of, for example, 4x4 or 5x5, with the same dimensions, or creatively with different dimensions.

The trendsetters in this principle are, of course, the major brands Apple and Windows. This inspired many designers around the world to use the Bento box style in their designs.

Minimalism is here to stay

In recent years, minimalism has gained popularity. This year, this will only become more important, functionality over form and simplicity for ease of use.

This will be reflected in online design in a lot of white space, large areas and no fuss that only distracts. The focus is even more on the core message that designers want to convey, for example with text-only headers.
